The Greek Philosophy

Greek food throughout its history and continuing today is for the Greeks a philosophy. They know that what makes a perfect feast is not just the food, but also the good company! Food is always prepared with the tastes of the guest in mind, should the dishes be roasted or fried, Light or Heavy, and the wine carefully chosen.

Much of the conversation at the dinner table centres amicably around the food. The freshness of the fish having just leapt from the sea; the vegetables freshly dug from the ground or picked from the vines of a local farmer. George, your host, will proudly point out how the best and freshest produce have been provided for you to enjoy!

It seems academic to point out that thousands of years ago, the Greeks created one of the most important civilizations ever and an important part of this civilization was the idea of good living.

The traditional diet and cooking methodology of Greek food has not changed since the ancient times, all the original flavours and ingredients are still used along with the most crucial basic ingredient of them all - Greek Olive Oil.

Greek cuisine uses some flavouring more often than other Mediterranean cuisines do, namely: Oregano, mint, garlic, onion, dill and bay laurel leaves. Other common herbs and spices include basil, thyme and fennel. Too much refinement is generally considered to be against the hearty spirit of the Greek cuisine.
Still today, it is generally agreed that following the Cretan traditional way of eating leads to less chance of suffering from heart disease compared to other Mediterranean countries.

Greek cuisine is largely free of animal fats, which is why it is so good for us. This, together with fresh organic foodstuff, large helpings of fish, fruit and vegetables leads us to conclude that it is not really surprising that as well as being the cradle of civilization, it was also the birthplace of the Mediterranean diet.

In Greek cuisine, you can re-discover the original sense of taste! This can all be enjoyed here in the sea side town of Jeffreys Bay South Africa, we look forward to welcoming you.

George is your host and what a host he proves to be, the man is everything you think when you think “Greek restaurateur” with equal parts humour, enthusiasm and genuine passion for people and food. It’s not Santorini-by-the-sea but rather everything it promises to be, a great ambience with an alfresco dining area that is comfortable and conducive to a festive night out.

A couple of weeks ago I was in Jeffreys Bay with my family and we decided to go restaurant hunting. As we spotted the Greek, I could only think of one thing “Get him to the Greek”. I said to myself that I got myself to the Greek, I would have just as much bragging rights as Russel Brand. The restaurant was magnificently set out and gives you the sense of being in a Mediterranean country.

How do you know if a Greek restaurant in Jeffreys Bay (or any other place in the world outside Greece) is really good? Well, first if you walk past the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon at 3:30pm, and it is completely filled with patrons ---- while other nearby restaurants are nearly empty and waiting for dinner guests in a couple hours.Second, if you walk into the restaurant and hear people speaking Greek at several tables.
